United Way of Hancock County is an umbrella organization covering vital and basic needs for 1 in 4 people in our community.
We bring people and resources together to identify and address our community’s immediate needs while working to implement long-term solutions to challenging problems. Our three-pronged approach combines partnering with local nonprofit agencies; delivering internal programming and direct services; and collaborating strategically throughout Hancock County to directly impact lives.

Direct services
United Way of Hancock County has been measurably improving lives since 1955. We know our community, and we know the diverse needs of its residents.
Our free tax preparation service, called VITA, makes over $1 million in impact to community members annually, with over 1,500 state and federal returns filed by VITA volunteers in 2024.
Volunteers United, our in-house volunteer hub, logs over 12,500 hours annually. These volunteer hours represent big savings for local organizations in need of a helping hand, and help individuals feel a sense of pride and belonging as they give back to their community.
We are looking forward to bringing the AmeriCorps Vista direct services program to our office in 2024, after having secured a federal grant for the program. United Way Vistas will address community challenges and fight poverty while building professional skills and earning a living wage.
