United Way of Hancock County is coordinating with FamilyWize Community Service Partnership, Walgreens, and Coats for Christmas to provide flu vaccines and vouchers at no cost to uninsured and underinsured residents of Hancock County.
Fifty free vaccines and 50 vouchers will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8 at Glenwood Middle School, 1715 N. Main St., on a first come, first served basis, while supplies last. Vaccines will be administered to those age seven and older. Walgreens is providing this opportunity as a part of a nationwide program created to make flu vaccines available to individuals without health insurance coverage or unable to afford a flu vaccination.
Coats for Christmas is organized by the Hancock Leadership Alumni Association in partnership with City Laundry and collects and distributes gently used coats to those in need the second weekend of December each year.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a yearly flu vaccination for anyone six months of age and older to help protect against the seasonal flu epidemic. December through March is peak season for flu activity and individuals are urged to take preventative measures to keep themselves and those around them healthy.
In addition to getting your flu vaccine, FamilyWize offers the following tips to help prevent the flu:
- Clean Your Hands: Wash your hands as often and thoroughly as possible with soap and water. If soap is not available use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Stay Home: Avoid leaving your home for school, work, and errands when you are sick. Experts recommend you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone.
- Avoid Close Contact: Do your best to avoid close contact with people who are sick. You should also avoid close contact with others when you are sick.
- Avoid Touching Your Eyes, Nose, or Mouth: Viruses often spread when a person touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth after exposure to the virus. Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.
- Keep Your Surroundings Clean: Clean and disinfect anything that may be contaminated with germs.
“At FamilyWize, we care about Americans affording what they need to stay healthy. Whether it’s prescription medications or preventive vaccines, our mission is to support the communities we serve and make a happy, healthy life accessible,” said Joseph Sanginiti, President and CEO of FamilyWize.
