Local Church Hosting 5K Fundraiser for Halt Hunger Initiative

Harvest Time International Ministries Church is hosting a 5K run/walk on Saturday, May 14 at the Waterfall Pavilion at Riverside Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the race to start at 9 a.m. Cost to enter is $25 per person. Registrations received before April 29 will receive a t-shirt.

Funds raised from the 5K will be evenly distributed to the following agencies addressing the needs of the food insecure in Hancock County: Lutheran Social Services, Salvation Army, City Mission, Christian Clearing House, CHOPIN Hall, West Ohio Food Bank and the Feed-A-Child weekend meal program. The total amount raised will be matched through the Templin Challenge grant which is set aside for the Halt Hunger Initiative grant pool.

In past years the pantries and organizations serving the food insecure have benefited from the Feinstein Challenge and the Stamp Out Hunger Food drive to boost them during the spring of the year and into the summer. Due to unforeseen circumstances, both events have not occurred for the past two years in or for our community.

A goal of United Way of Hancock County’s Halt Hunger Initiative advisory board is to support local food programs and providers in their efforts to provide nutritious food to individuals and families in need of food assistance. Nearly one out of eight individuals in Hancock County is food insecure, meaning they may not know where or how they will get their next meal.

The Feed-A-Child program distributes six easy-to-make weekend meals each Friday afternoon during the school year for children in grades K-5 in the Findlay City and Cory Rawson schools. These weekend meals are provided to families who have identified a need for supplemental meals over the weekend. Last year, over 650 students were served through this program. The Feed-A-Child program is serving 700 students during the 2015-16 school year and is coordinated by the Findlay Family YMCA.
